Even though engineering seats in colleges across the state will go up by 9,780 this year, no new engineering college will come up in Mumbai. According to figures released by the directorate of technical education (DTE), around 33 new engineering colleges have been approved for Maharashtra by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Also, while management seats in the state have gone up by 53% this year, there has been just an 11% rise in engineering seats. “It’s not important how many more seats have been added.

Quality should be stressed upon,” said an engineering professor.
However, the figures released may not be final and there may still be hope for Mumbai as the DTE is expecting another list. “The AICTE may send another list. It may have new engineering colleges sanctioned for Mumbai,” said a DTE official, adding that the applications sent from Mumbai may not have met the requirements prescribed by the AICTE, and thus no college has been sanctioned for the city. “There may have been discrepancies or loopholes in the applications. Some may get through in the second list,” said the official.

The state had send proposals for 240 new institutes, of which 116 new colleges for engineering, MBA, MCA and pharmacy were approved this year. Meanwhile, most engineering seats in new colleges, sanctioned by the AICTE, are in the streams of computer science and electrical engineering.
