The state home department’s plans to install closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) in different cities have apparently hit a roadblock due to financial problems.

The department has appealed to all districts to ensure that it’s planning and development committee allocates about 5% of its funds for the project’s success.

“There is unanimity that CCTVs should be set up in different points in cities for better management of traffic and security. But huge expense is involved in its implementation,” said the minister of state for home, Satej Patil.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the first-ever two-day national workshop on ‘conflict resolution’ at Maharashtra Police Academy (MPA), Nashik. About 20 IPS officers from
different states attended the event.

“About 15 districts have responded positively to our request for the use of  planning and development committee funds. Even if a district shares 5% of their funds with the police department, this project can be achieved in phases,” he said.

Patil said the recruitment of 11,000 policemen will be conducted this year.

“To bring more transparency, the interview of examinees has been done away with. The selection will now be based on a written exam followed by a physical test,” he said.

While inaugurating the workshop, Patil said that it has become very difficult to predict the reasons of conflict in the present scenario.

“The means to handle such conflicts need to be evolved keeping in mind the numerous possible reasons. Such workshops will hence be very helpful in devising mechanisms to face the modern-day challenges of conflict whether local, national or international,” he said.

The MPA director, Sanjay Barve, explained the various kinds of conflicts, its theories, exercises, hostage negotiations, technical aspects, real-life situations.

He stated that the proceedings and resolutions of the workshop will be documented and communicated to the bureau of police research and development.
