Irina Pazinenko surprised the audience at a programme here on Sunday by singing Marathi bhajans. She is part of the Marathi bhajan group in Ukraine and her immense interest in Indian music has brought her to Pune.

A disciple of late Nirmaladevi, who propagated Sahaj Yoga, she presented bhajans at the programme organised by the Satish Javdekar Mitra Parivar here. Ranragini awards were given away at the programme and the annual magazine Shivsmruti was released.

Irina, who is a musician by profession, has come to Pune for two months to learn Indian classical music. She regaled the audience with Marathi bhajans and won applause for the Jogwa that she presented.

Clad in a green sari, Irina started with the bhajan ‘Maa Teri Jai Ho’, followed by the Jogwa. She then presented the famous bhajan, ‘Anandache Dohi Anand Tarang’.

It was in 2000 that she came in contact with the Sahaj Yoga group in Ukraine. “I was really impressed with Indian classical music. It has a soothing quality and divine roots. My curiosity and eagerness to know more and learn about Indian classical music grew over the years,” she said.

She said it helped her to meditate and brought a feeling of bliss. With the intense desire to learn Indian music she came to India for the first time six years ago. She then trained under Prasad Khaparde, a disciple of Ustad Rashid Khan.

She returned to Pune to pursue training in Marathi bhajans and Indian ragas. She is now learning from Reena Pierluca and Surekha Apte. She is also learning about music therapy.

Prajakta Dhayade is polishing her skills as a bhajan singer. Dhayade accompanied her on the harmonium at the programme on Sunday, while Rishikesh Tikhe was on the tabla.

“Indian bhajans and music are quite popular in Ukraine. Even though I used to learn it in Ukraine, the vibrations in India are quite different. It is nice to learn here. I have also been to Ashtavinayak, Brahmapuri and Ganpatipule. These places too add to your positive feeling,” said Irina.

Earlier, Rekha Salunkhe, Sushila Pawar, Shailaja Datar, Manjiri Bhagwat and Anisa Sayyed were honoured with Ranragini awards for their contribution to various fields in view of Women’s Day on March 8. Aadishakti women’s self-help group from Kothrud was also feted.
