Mumbai University plans Bhimsen Joshi music centre

Students who wish to pursue a career in music will now get to learn it from the veterans in the music world. To pay tribute to late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the Mumbai university is planning to set up a music centre by his name. University authorities have sent a proposal to the chief minister asking for Rs10 crore to set up the centre at its Kalina campus.

The university on Tuesday sent a letter to Prithviraj Chauhan’s office. A university source said that the university is keen on setting up Gurukul Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Centre for Excellence in Music.

“The university already has a department of music where degree and diploma courses are offered. This centre will be for all music lovers and certificate courses in music will be offered,” said the source.

“Veterans in the music world will be invited as faculty in the centre. Literature on classical music and different forms of music will be made available for students in the centre’s library.”
