Navy objects to high-rise building in Mumbai citing security reasons

The navy has taken exception to Maharashtra government according permission for occupation certificate to a controversial high-rise building in the naval area here, citing serious security concerns.

"Despite repeated intimations to various concerned departments of Maharashtra government to not issue a 'No Objection Certificate (NOC)' or an 'Occupation Certificate (OC)', it has come to our notice that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has issued an OC to Adarsh Society building in Colaba," a defence spokesperson told Press Trust of India.

"The Navy has again written to all concerned departments of the state government not to issue either a NOC or an OC, temporary or permanent, to the Adarsh Society building," the spokesperson said.

The 100-metre tall building next to a planned helipad and military installations has violated the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) limit of a height of 30 metres, navy sources said.

The high-rise in Colaba is alleged to have been built on a prime plot belonging to the government. Among the allotted houses in the building are several former top officials and politicians.
