Northern cold wave brings Pune temp down to 8.80ºC

Owing to the cold wave conditions in the north, the temperatures in the state dipped further on Monday. The minimum temperature of 8.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in the city on Monday while it was 9.7 degrees on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that it may go down further, though a drastic decrease in temperature is not expected.

Deputy director general of IMD, Pune, Medha Khole told DNA that 8.7 degrees was one degree below normal and was the lowest in this season in the city.

“A severe cold wave and cold wave conditions prevail in the northern parts of the country. The minimum temperatures are below normal in the north and central India. The northerly winds have been strengthened by the low pressure depression formed over the Bay of Bengal. Therefore the temperature in the state has gone down,” she explained. Low humidity and clear sky conditions have also added to the cold.

In the state, the lowest temperature of 7.1 degrees was recorded in Nashik on Monday while Ahmednagar was the coldest at 6.4 degrees on Sunday.

Cold conditions will prevail in northern parts of the country and will add to the cold in northern parts of the state which is adjacent to north India, Khole said.

“A fall by a degree or so is expected but there are no indications of drastic fall at present. Further changes will depend on the low pressure depression in the Bay of Bengal,” she added.

Parts of Orissa, Bihar, west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Saurashtra and Kutch will experience cold wave conditions for the next few days.
