Ever since the government permitted FSI incentives in lieu of setting up public parking facilities, proposals for parking lots on private land are increasing by the day.

Thirty-one proposals have so far been cleared by the state-appointed committee in 18 months.

A senior official from BMC’s road department said that provisions for a parking space of 27,835 vehicles have been made through these proposals.

For 14 lakh vehicles plying daily, the city has public parking capacity for only 8,000 cars. He added that the new infrastructure being created will reduce the parking space crunch.

Among the 35 proposals, 24 were from plots situated in the island city, six from the western suburbs, and the remaining five were from the eastern suburbs. Once all these lots are set up, the island city will have an additional public parking space for 23,362 vehicles, parking capacity in western suburbs will of 2,787 cars and that in eastern suburbs will go up by 1,416 cars.

Transport expert Ashok Datar, however, claimed that this was not the right way of creating parking infrastructure. “The proposals are coming as it is FSI driven. This is no solution,” he said.
