Police chief Borwankar wants Pune to be a 'drug-free' city

The illegal businesses of counterfeit Indian currency and drug trafficking are some of the main reasons for the rise in terror activities in the country, observed Pune police commissioner, Meeran Chadha Borwankar.

She was speaking on Wednesday at the valedictory function of a month-long awareness campaign against the use of drugs, organised by the Pune city police and Muktangan de-addiction centre at police headquarters in Shivajinagar.

Borwankar said the police are gathering details about sleeper cells of different subversive organisations. “We are keeping a watch on suspicious movements of the members of such cells,” she added.

During the campaign, various events and programmes were organised in city colleges and also pamphlets were distributed to highlight the ills of drug abuse.

An essay competition on ‘Think health, not drugs’ was also held, in which 1,700 students participated.
Noted actor Vikram Gokhale was the chief guest for the ceremony along with Anil Avchat, director of Muktangan.

Senior police officers were also present on the occasion.

Borwankar said, “The city residents, mainly students, need to come forward and help the police in curbing the illegal use of drugs in the city and make Pune drugs-free.”

Gokhale said that society should give respect to police personnel. “Addiction to drugs is not only spoiling the young generation of the country but also encouraging our enemy countries in fomenting terrorist activities,” he remarked.
