Police officials attend workshop on various aspects of Interpol

Officials from the CBI Interpol Unit Delhi, along with representatives from the ministry of external affairs (MEA) and ministry of home affairs (MHA), on Friday held a session with over 90 officers of the Mumbai police. The policemen were briefed on various aspects of Interpol, ranging from how it functions to how flawless paperwork plays a vital role during extradition. Senior police officers said that the session was essential, as improper paperwork often works in favour of the wanted accused residing in foreign countries.

"Two officials of the Delhi Unit of the Interpol and one each from MEA and MHA held a session with 90 officers from the city police familiarizing them with their working procedure. Officers like sub-inspectors, assistant inspectors and inspectors attended the session which will enable them to deal with cases involving foreign agencies correctly," said an IPS officer who had attended the session along with a few other senior officers.

Representations were made with examples and references to past cases, by the officers of the Interpol to train city police officers in the session that started at 10:30am and continued till 6pm.

An officer said that the advocates of the accused sometimes take advantage of the loopholes in the paperwork of the police and such a session will help them avoid errors.

"We were briefed about the extradition process, procedure and treaties, letter of rogatories, red corner notices, how paper work should be done and how extradition cell of the CBI functions. Delhi based Interpol officials had spoken in details on these issues. Although there is specific branch and agency that coordinates with the Interpol, but the emphasis was on that everybody should have basic knowledge about the Interpol," said police inspector Ashok Dabhade of Malabar Hill police station.
