Probe into threats to Maharashtra RTI activist

Taking serious note of the complaints of a Right to Information (RTI) activist about threat to his life, the state information commissioner (SIC) of Pune, Vijay Kuvalekar, has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter.

The RTI activist, Shivaji Raut, had sought information from Satara-based Anant English School, where he alleged that the seniority list used for promotion of employees has not been prepared by the school since 1989.

Despite making applications under the Right To Information Act, 2005 to the school and the office of the education officer of Satara Zilla Parishad, he did not get any reply.

Raut alleged there was an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in the school due to political interference. He also stated that his applications were not accepted and he was threatened with dire consequences if he continued to pursue the matter.

The SIC, Pune took Raut’s statements seriously and ordered a detailed inquiry by the deputy education officer of the zilla parishad.

While admitting the matter did not technically come under the purview of the RTI Act, the SIC stated it was the duty of the school administration as well as the district administration that users of RTI are not threatened in any manner.

The report by the deputy education officer was submitted last month and confirmed that a vicious atmosphere is prevailing in the school. The deputy education officer had ordered the school principal to ensure the security of the employees and had warned people against fomenting trouble.
