Gifting it away
The BJP’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gopinath Munde, is known for his wit. At a recent function by a social organisation, Munde was presented with a statue of a lion made from silver. Munde seemed to like the statue and expressed his desire to display it on his office table. However, he took special care to request the organiser to deliver it directly to his office in Mumbai. Even as people started pondering over his special request, Munde explained that he never got the gifts, as party workers often took the gifts home.

A humane bureaucrat
Although the popular perception of government officers is anything but good, they do have a humane side. Recently, our colleague was witness to a kind act performed by a senior bureaucrat. A young collegian was running from pillar to post to get his domicile certificate. Unable to get it, the teary-eyed collegian camped outside the bureaucrat’s office. The officer was shocked to see the collegian outside his door at  9 pm and promised help. True to his word, the officer examined the collegian’s application in the morning and, realising that the matter would take time, made the effort to call up the college principal and explained the situation to him.

Political mileage
Politicians never lose a single opportunity to get publicity. With the municipal elections fast approaching, Diwali 2011 has presented itself as a welcome opportunity for corporators to wish their voters and grab attention. The situation has resulted in printers becoming very busy in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, making special Diwali cards for corporators. According to the printers, most corporators want minimum text and their individual pictures larger than that of the respective deities.

No respect for deadlines
We Indians have a poor time sense and scant respect for deadlines. Proof of this was visible at a recent book release function, where the publisher could not even deliver the copies of the books in time. The organisers, who received only the jackets of the book, quickly decided to distribute just that. The perplexed audience asked for the book and all that the organiser could say was, “Today, all we have is the cover page. The books will be available in a few days.”

Corruption bigger than Ravana
This Dassera, one of our colleagues took his 8-year-old daughter to see the burning of Ravana’s effigy. The girl was surprised to see the ‘effigy of corruption’ being burnt instead of the traditional demon. Familiar with the 10-headed Ravana from the Ramayana, the daughter asked the father if corruption was more dangerous and evil than Ravana. Our colleague was truly stumped and left scratching his head.
