As Puneites voted on Thursday, the police control room was flooded with calls complaining about various electoral malpractices.

The police received a total of 259 calls accusing political party workers and supporters of candidates of indulging in free for alls, bribing voters and violating the model code of conduct. Only two cases had been filed till evening.

A few heated moments were witnessed in Bhavani Peth area when Avinash Bagve, son of former minister of state for home, Ramesh Bagve and a Congress candidate himself, was involved in a squabble with a team of policemen led by assistant commissioner of police Ranjit Dhure. Both parties involved later accused each other of manhandling.

The police said Bagve had set up a canvassing booth in 100 metre vicinity of a polling station at Kasewadi in violation of the code of conduct. On a tip-off, a team of policemen led by inspector Sandipan Sawant went to the spot and asked Bagve to shut the shop. A heated argument ensued when Bagve refused to comply. Later, the police said a team of policemen led by Dhure went to the spot and evacuated Bagve and his supporters from the polling station and took them to Khadak police station. A free for all ensued when Bagve and his supporters protested. Later, the police filed a case of deterring the police team from discharging duty and manhandling them against Bagve. Bagve too has moved an application alleging that the policemen manhandled him.

Later in the evening, police commissioner Meeran Borwankar said, “ACP Dhure has an experience of 35 years and he is unlikely to do anything rash. However, the next course of action will be decided after screening the video footage of the incident.’’

In Warje, a supporter of a candidate was trapped while he was allegedly bribing a voter by offering him Rs3,000. The police said a non-cognisable case has been filed against both the supporter and the voter.
