Municipal commissioner, Mahesh Pathak, on Monday said that good water supply to all areas in the city would be possible only after a metering system is set up and charges levied as per usage.
He was speaking at the general body (GB) meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday.
Pathak said there are many solutions proposed by the municipal administration for improving the water supply. However, to solve the problem effectively, there is need to take a decision on the 24X7 water supply scheme. Under this project, water supply could be given for 24 hours a day but water meters would have to be set up and charges levied as per usage.
Pathak’s comments have gained importance against the backdrop of repeatedly failed attempts of the PMC administration to appoint a consultant for 24X7 water supply and for equitable distribution of water.
Pathak had attended meetings on the water supply from the three major water centres at Parvati, Cantonment and near the SNDT University. He said supply to the downtown areas is good, but there are problems at locations distant from the water centres. Hence, the water supply to citizens per day ranges from 90 litres to 200 litres.
Availability of power is also an issue. If the water pump is shut down for an hour due to power trouble, it impacts the water supply for about 10 hours, Pathak claimed.
He said the administration has proposed to lay a direct water pipeline from Khadakwasla dam to the Warje water works.
Another pipeline would be laid to the Cantonment water works.
The Cantonment water works would be renovated. The water supply problem in Hadapsar area would be solved in the near future with the construction of a new tank.
Pathak said solving the water supply problem is the responsibility of the administration, corporators and citizens together.
There should not be pressure on the administration while setting up valve controls of water distribution network.
He pointed out that problems of water supply get aggravated due to supply to unauthorised constructions.
