A 35-year-old police sub-inspector was assaulted by a group of revellers when he asked a disco jockey (DJ) to stop playing music after the permissible time during Navratri celebrations in Khar (East).

According to the police, the incident took place around 10.25pm when sub-inspector Vinod Shinde went to the Navratra mandal in Nirmal Nagar and asked the DJ to stop the music. DJ Halcher Wilson D’Costa and six unknown persons then attacked Shinde with a blunt object. Shinde is recuperating at Bhabha Hospital in Bandra (West), said the police.

However, the revellers had had a different story to tell. Rakesh Jaiswal, 27, who had a plaster on his left hand, said, “The officer (Shinde) in fact was the one who assaulted us. He abused and assaulted D’Costa and lost his temper when someone threw a dandiya stick at him from within the crowd. Then a furious Shinde started assaulting on us with his lathi.” An FIR has been registered against seven persons for obstructing and assaulting an on-duty police officer, rioting, causing hurt, unlawful assembly.

No one is arrested.
