Search panel to submit 5 names for Pune University's VC post
They will submit the final list of five names to the chancellor of the UoP, the state governor, on Tuesday.

Nearly four months after the search for the new vice chancellor (VC) of the University of Pune (UoP) began, the final round of interactions with the search committee appointed for the process took place on Monday.
The interactions began at 9.30 am at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (Yashada) and went on till late afternoon.
The state government appointed the search committee members to include director of the Institute for Social and Economic Change, RS Deshpande; Punjab and Haryana high court retired chief justice Mukul Mudgal; and principal secretary in the higher and technical education department, Sanjay Kumar.
They will submit the final list of five names to the chancellor of the UoP, the state governor, on Tuesday.
“The search committee met 18 out of 19 people scheduled for interactions. Five names were shortlisted and will be sent to the governor by Tuesday,” said Mudgal.
Even though the final selection takes place within a week of the shortlisted names being sent to the governor, no announcement will take place before January 23.
“No announcement is likely before January 23. We believe the matter is sub judice as a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the court for which the next hearing is on that date. However, the matter is being handled by the Maharashtra government and the search committee has no role in it,” added Mudgal.
A Thane-based activist, Suresh Patil Khede has filed a PIL in the Bombay high court challenging the validity of Maharashtra Universities (Amendment) Ordinance of 2009. The PIL contends that the entire process adopted by the state government, including nomination of a search committee, violates provisions of the UGC Act, 1956.
While seeking the UGC’s view on the PIL and taking assurance from the state government that no announcement would be made until January 23, which is the next date for the hearing. The court gave the go-ahead to the search committee for conducting interviews of candidates.
A total of 157 applications were received for the post of the UoP VC, of which 19 names were shortlisted. On Monday, the search committee met all the candidates, except a female professor who didn’t turn up for the interview.
