Security beefed up for 26/11 anniversary in Pune

The city police have beefed up security in Pune in view of the forthcoming second anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks.

On November 26, 2008, terrorists attacked Mumbai and killed and injured several people. The incident had shaken the entire country.

The city police have charted out a plan and have appealed to citizens not to panic and ignore any rumours. “We have started circulating SMSes to citizens informing them to be alert. The police should be informed if anybody comes across any suspicious object or person,” the police officials said.

Joint commissioner of police, Ashok Dhiware said, “Patrolling in different areas of the city has increased. We have started circulating notices to hotels and lodges to remain alert. We are also inspecting the lodges and
examining their registers.”

The police have set up temporary barricades at different points to examine vehicles, their occupants and the belongings.

“The citizens must inform us immediately in case of slightest suspicion. They can call the police control on 100 or 26122880,” the officials added.
Deputy commissioner of police (special branch), Makarand Ranade said, “We are trying to utilise maximum policemen in sensitive places such as Osho Commune, Lal Deval and other areas. We have even directed the control room to furnish the information to police who are patrolling in the area.”

Two companies of additional State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Quick Response Team (QRT), striking force, riot control and bomb detection and disposal squads would be deployed within the next couple of days.
GPRS systems and wireless sets will be installed in police vans patrolling the areas.
