Shiv Sena plans to start union for DJs

Disc Jockeys (DJ) can now raise their voice through the Shiv Sena which has formed an organisation to bring them together.

A cine wing of the party, Maharashtra Cinema and Television Sena has set up a federation for DJs to solve their issues.

"There are about 50,000 DJs in the country and we are bringing them together for the first time. We want to solve their problems and give them professional security like licences and identity cards," the president of the Cinema Sena Akshay Bardapurkar said.

The DJs face a lot of problems like not getting money on time, there are no proper contracts entered into with clubs or bars and no insurance for the instruments they used, Akshay said.

DJ Akbar Sami, who is supporting the efforts, said "it is a good idea to bring the DJs together over various issues and soon we would meet to chalk out a plan on what needs to be done."

DJ Savio D'sa who approached the Sena said the profession has been growing fast but the youths who are getting into it face lot of uncertainties.

"The passion for music attracts lot of youngsters to the profession. But there are issues like identification, insurance, proper contract system. It has become a full-time jobs for many and we want to streamline the profession with the help of the Shiv Sena," Savio said.

The federation would start working by distributing identity cards to give them recognition as a DJ and a website in this regard would also be launched soon, Savio said.

The Sena sources said that it is an attempt to attract more youths to the party to fight with Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

However, there are some within the party who have reservations about the move as the party known for moral policing is supporting the profession imported from the western culture.
