Even though the city has been receiving sporadic rainfall for the past few days, it isn’t enough to bring down the soaring mercury levels or the high level of discomfort index. And the weatherman has no good news either.

According to the weather bureau, the relief from the intermittent rains or the pre-monsoon showers will be short-lived as increase in humidity will make people more uncomfortable in the heat and this will continue till the rains finally hit the city.

“We are a coastal area and the winds normally blow to north, south-west, south and other places,” said Dr Sathidevi, director, regional meteorological centre, Colaba. “But due to cyclone Phet that is moving towards Pakistan on the Arabian Sea, we have had more cloud formation towards this side.”

She said, “Gujarat is likely to see more showers, but that cannot be an indication of the advent of monsoon.”

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) refused to set any date for the arrival of monsoon in the city. “No exact date can be given as yet. There will be showers for a while now,” Sathidevi said. “Till the time there is very heavy shower, the temperature in the city will continue to rise.”
