Students rejoice as govt refuses to allow Andheri colleges to shut down

The Mumbai high court’s decision on the state government’s best-of-five formula on Wednesday did bring cheer to many students in the city, but those in and around Andheri got one more reason to rejoice.

Following a directive  by the Bombay high court to the Maharashtra government to initiate the admission process in MVLU College and Chinai Junior College in Andheri, the government has sent a notice to the management denying permission for the closure of these two colleges.

In a notice served on the college management on June 19, the government has asked the management to initiate the admission procedure with immediate effect.

The colleges, with a capacity of over 1,800, had been on the verge
of closure for the past two years. The high court, in its directive on December 10, 2009, had questioned the absolute authority of the management regarding the closure of the college.

The court had asked the government to take the final decision on this matter. Both the junior colleges had stopped taking students for the past two years.

The MVLU Chinai Bachao Samiti has welcomed the government decision. “The decision has come after a long battle,” said Ramsagar Pandye of the organisation formed to stop the closure. The Bachao Samiti has also asked for a government appointed administrator to run the college.

Meanwhile, deputy charity commissioner GN Bansode has issued a notice to Laxmi Education Trust on May 12, 2010, questioning the annual budget of the trust and other financial matters. Failure to answer the notice could lead to the dissolving of the trust.
