MUMBAI
It is the first time ever that undergraduate students from the arts, commerce or science stream have been made such an offer by multinational companies.
Three undergraduate students from St Xavier’s College in Dhobi Talao have struck gold. They have been made job offers at an unprecedented pay package of Rs10 lakh per annum.
It is the first time ever that undergraduate students from the arts, commerce or science stream have been made such an offer by multinational companies. Not many students even from the best B-schools in the city are offered Rs10 lakh per annum as salary.
“The campus placements have been very good this year. We had some big multinational companies on our campus during the placement season. Most of the students who have received good packages are closely related to the finance background. They are from the undergraduate management course or from BA in economics,” Fr Frazer Mascarenhas, principal, St Xavier’s College, told DNA.
He added that students from the institute had, so far, never bagged an offer of more than Rs7 lakh per annum.
“This is the first time that our students have received such amazing packages. We are proud of it,” said Mascarenhas. The names of the three students, however, are deliberately not being disclosed. Other students have managed to get offers between Rs7-10 lakh.
“This is unheard of only in Mumbai; it is a known trend in Delhi. Undergraduate students do get huge offers. We are trying to set the trend in Mumbai. Also, several events that took place in the college throughout the year have added to its profile. US president Barack Obama visited our college. We also organised a national level economics festival for the first time,” said Joseph Sebastian, this year’s student placement co-ordinator for the South Mumbai institute.
Sebastian further said that the autonomous status of the college also appealed the recruiters.
“The quality of education is set to improve with the autonomy status. We have a wide range of courses, and also a diverse and large students’ base, which is why we have managed to attract the recruiters. The numbers are only going to improve in the coming years,” he said.
Several undergraduate colleges are increasingly seeing a rising trend in the placement offers made on campus. “We see a growth every year. The highest campus placement offer made this year in our college Rs6 lakh. The least amount offered to a student from our college was around Rs3.5 lakh. A CA student from HR College of Commerce and Economics was offered Rs4 lakh,” said Sunil Mantri, principal of NM College in Vile Parle.
