Dealing with justice
In a written statement, intellectuals including Noam Chomsky, Romila Thapar, Prabhat Patnaik, Ashok Mitra and Mushirul Hasan have expressed shock over Binayak Sen’s sentencing (‘Intellectuals protest, seek immediate release of Binayak Sen’, DNA, December 28). The behaviour of these intellectuals is shocking as it shows their utter disregard for the rule of law and court’s authority of judgment. We are ruled by law and there is the legal procedure of appealing to the higher courts if miscarriage of justice is claimed in any case. Notwithstanding Sen’s case, any court verdict should not be undone by street protests or petitions by people in general. If these intellectuals claim that the charges against Dr Sen have not been corroborated in the court, the right course is to appeal in the high court and argue Sen’s innocence there.

This is with reference to ‘Wife says Binayak ‘caged’ like animal’, (DNA, January 4). It is pathetic to read about the hellish ordeal that Binayak Sen is undergoing to save the downtrodden tribals from the illegal mining sharks. It’s a shame that an activist is branded as seditious while working for a good cause wherein countless corrupt under the viciously rotten political clout go scot-free . The Central leaders who have still some humanity left in them should immediately reconsider this issue to rectify the wrong already done.

No wrong intentions
This is to inform you that the cartoon been published in the Toon In section on the Edit page is highly insulting (DNA, December 29). I would like to emphasise that  publishing this cartoon is an insult to the people of Iran who have chosen their president. Apart from this, Iran has repeatedly declared its nuclear programmes are for peaceful and civilian purposes. It has been under IAEA surveillance and there is no undeclared unclear activity and material in Iran. This cartoon is a slander to the people and government of Iran. Iran has no intention to produce nuclear weapons contrary to those countries armed with nuclear weapons and who are also not parties to the NPT, and believes strongly in the principles of the NPT.
