Golden opportunity
This is with reference to ‘The world votes for India at the UNSC’, (DNA, October 14). Prime minister Manmohan Singh and his team need to be complimented for securing a non-permanent seat with 98% ayes. This augurs well for a country striving to emerge as a rising economic power. India must use this opportunity for broad-basing its views on key international issues and allay unnecessary fears of its neighbours. The overwhelming majority of nations favouring India is a sure indication of their growing dismay at the present formation of security council and they want India to play an important role in representing the third world countries. Notwithstanding opposition from few hostile countries, India must work for a permanent seat by using this opportunity to the hilt.

India’s victory
The CWG was very well organised and there were no major hiccups (‘India second to none’, DNA, October 15). The Games have also shown India as a sports loving and a sporting nation. Congratulations to all the winners. After this success the government should take steps to nurture deserving sportsmen/women. The concerned authorities, instead of blaming each other, should work constructively for such international events as it is India’s reputation at stake.

Shame on politicians
It is a known fact that Indian politicians are fools. But it was not known that they are as foolish as Congressmen Manikrao Thakre and Satish Chaturvedi are (‘From the horse’s mouth: Rs5 crore for Sonia Gandhi’s rally; Maharashtra CM gives Rs2 crore’, DNA, October 15). We had heard about sting operations but not voluntary declarations about rally donations as did Thakre and Chaturvedi. There is a limit to stupidity. But Thakre and Chaturvedi have surpassed that. It is a known thing that political rallies are paid ones irrespective of which political party holds it. But it was not known that the organisers discuss it in such a manner. This culture is not new but the fact remains that these two will not be punished for fear of more revelations. The time has come for the people to throw these power-hungry and corrupt people out.
