Bhosalenagar residents take the green cause forward

Residents of Bhosalenagar believe in leading by example. The mohalla committee of the area has been passionately working towards Pune’s green cause for the last seven years. They have planted over 3,000 saplings in and around the area. Their only motto is ‘Plant trees and save trees’.

The residents started with their own area, planting saplings to help promote greenery in the locality. Once they succeeded in their mission, they did not stop and decided to take the green cause ahead. They took permission from the then vice chancellor of Pune University, Ashok Kolaskar, and started planting saplings on the varsity’s premises.

Talking about their work, Rajnikant Upadhyay, member of the mohalla committee, said, “We started planting saplings 7 years ago, after taking permission from Ashok Kolaskar. The saplings were planted on the hill, which is part of the Pune university’s property.”

Most of the trees are planted during monsoon because it helps in the survival percentage of the trees, which is now around 80%. Those who come for a walk every day also water the plants.

Harish Hukmani, another member of mohalla committee, said, “This year, we have received 325 plants from Mahindra and Mahindra. Many residents plant saplings as per their convenience and also take care of them.”

According to Bhosalenagar residents, even if small efforts are made to improve the city’s green cover then the global warming can be tackled. This will also ensure stability in the city’s overall climate.

Jitendra Tanna, resident of Bhosalenagar said, “When we go for morning walks and sit amidst the greenery, it feels like we are in heaven. Especially during the rainy season, when you get to also witness different kinds of birds.”
