National Commission for Women to be roped in for effective strategies to curb alarming incidence of disease.

Doctors, professionals rise to childhood obesity problem

Expressing concern over the alarming rise in incidence of childhood obesity, a group of professionals including obesity surgeons, dieticians, physiotherapists, physicians and others are going to approach the National Commission for Women (NCW) in their fight against mother and child obesity.

A two-day conference on obesity is taking place at Hotel Four Points Sheraton in Pune under the aegis of All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity Conference (AIAAROCON) 2013.

Stakeholders in the field of obesity treatment and management would be under one roof right from family physicians, dieticians, school nutritionists, bariatric surgeons, endocrinologists, school teachers and parents.

The group of professionals that work on research and strategies in reducing obesity and related problems would kick off a ‘Mission Obesity’ from this platform, targeting in particular childhood obesity.

“The incidence of obesity is increasing alarmingly in children and there are two main reasons. First is the genetic predisposition and second is skewed metabolism and lifestyle issues such as increasing physical inactivity, unhealthy food etc.

While childhood obesity is on the rise, we feel it is our moral responsibility to take entire family on the radar. This problem is getting serious and we want to reach out to real change makers i..e mothers and teachers,” said obesity surgeon Dr Jayshree Todkar and organising secretary of AIAAROCON 2013.

An open forum for ‘childhood obesity’ has been arranged for teachers and parents on Sunday where specialists from various fields will guide them on the topic, she added.

Todkar said that the member of NCW, Nirmala Sawant, would flag off the event. “At this conference we would deliberate and officially send a letter to NCW about how to form effective strategies to curb rising mother and child obesity. We are asking them to form some grass-root interventions especially to enlist target teachers and mothers in this fight against obesity,” added Todkar.
