Pune police get away with non-compliance of orders

Despite Pune police commissioner Meeran Borwankar sending out strict orders to all the 29 police stations in the city to collect information about hotels, lodges and cyber cafes in the city, only 15 stations have complied with the order.

This information was revealed when activist Rajesh Shende filed a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.
Shende had submitted his query to the police on February 3. In reply, the police said that the commissioner had
issued orders on July 28, 2011, to consolidate the above
details. However, only 15 stations followed the orders and sent the details.

In reply to Shende’s query about the action being taken against the police stations who had failed to submit the report, the commissionerate said that this order did not
involve any penalty clause.

The police stations in Bharati Vidyapeeth, Hadapsar, Warje Malwadi, Hinjewadi, Mundhwa, Dattawadi, Kondhwa, Chatuhshrungi, Vishrambaug, Wanavdi, Deccan Gymkhana, Pimpri, Samarth, Vishrantwadi and Khadki areas complied with the orders.

While 14 other police stations of Khadak, Kothrud, Farashkhana, Shivajinagar, Bund Garden, Swargate, Sahakarnagar, Cantonment, Nigdi, Bhosari, Sangvi, Yerawada and Airport areas failed to provide the information.

Shende said, “The police are not following the orders of their superiors. When I asked them about the action being taken against the police stations which have not provided any information, they said that there was no need to penalise them, as it was just a notification by the commissioner. I appealed against the police for not disclosing the number of cyber cafes. They have verbally told me that they do not have the list of cyber cafes under the police stations in the city.”
