Towering menace for Mohammadwadi in Pune

The Nyati County Mohalla Committee (NCMC) in Mohammadwadi is up in arms against a mobile tower in their locality that they
allege has been erected illegally. They fear that the tower will pose health hazards for them and the students of Delhi Public School (DPS) in the area.

Speaking to DNA, the president of NCMC, Captain Deepak Sethi, said, “I have sought information about the permission granted to erect the tower under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. The RTI query was filed over three months ago, but I have not received any reply yet.”

According to him, the DPS, which has about 2,500 students on the campus, has also complained to the local authorities, but to no avail.

He added that the mobile company had recently built a generator room at the base of the tower which was demolished in August 2011 by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). “The civic body had assured that the tower has been made non-operational,” he said.

The committee wants the tower to be brought down. “We want civic officials and the police to inspect the site,” he said. Sethi added that the notification by the department of telecommunication prohibits mobile towers in residential areas.
