KABUL: Two suspected Taliban militants were killed in a gunfight after they ambushed a US-led convoy in volatile southern Afghanistan, the ousted militia and the US military said on Thursday.

US military spokesman Lieutenant Mike Cody said that US warplanes and elite troops responded to the attack by the Islamic insurgents on Wednesday in Grisk, a district in troubled Helmand province.

"A quick-reaction force with air cover responded to the scene and the enemy fled. There were no Afghan or coalition casualties," he said.

He had no information on Taliban casualties but a man claiming to be a Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, called AFP from an unknown location and said that two of the movement's fighters were killed in the attack.

"We ambushed an American convoy in Helmand yesterday. We don't know about their casualties but two of our mujahedin (holy warriors) were killed," Ahmadi said.

The Taliban, whose regime was forced out of power by a US-led offensive at the end of 2001, are still carrying out attacks on US and Afghan targets as well as government and aid organizations.
