LETTERS: Media money off Bachchan

‘Belling the media cat’ by Anil Dharker in DNA (December 12), was an accurate observation of the media madness in its 24x7 vigil at Leelavati hospital. Being a journalist and having edited a film magazine myself, I am well aware of the import of reporting such grave news, but at what cost?

‘Belling the media cat’ by Anil Dharker in DNA (December 12), was an accurate observation of the media madness in its 24x7 vigil at Leelavati hospital. Being a journalist and having edited a film magazine myself, I am well aware of the import of reporting such grave news, but at what cost? Disrupting peace, breaking ICU rules by gate-crashing, posing as a doctor, and posing a health risk to Bachchan?

That’s absolutely not on. That the concerned TV channel and the hospital authorities took appropriate measures was good news, but this situation should not have arisen to begin with. Worse, cash registers of TV channels jingled with the hundreds of SMS fliers they ran on their channels! I am certain that the low-profile Bachchans have taken umbrage at the untimely obituary-like sycophancy of the print media.

For Pete’s sake (and thankfully), Bachchan is not dead! The media should show some maturity in its reporting strategy. DNA’s Sumit Ghoshal has painstakingly gone about reporting about the illness (diverculitis) and the operation thereafter by collecting information from the appropriate medical authorities and keeping the readers rightly informed. I congratulate DNA in getting mature and thinking writers like Anil Dharker to contribute to the paper, making the newspaper reading ritual for me worth my while.

And thus crumbles Bengaluru

Our politicians are a strange lot. Dharam Singh, dummy chief minister of Karnataka, is changing the name of Bangalore to Bengaluru. What difference will it make? All Bangalore’s problems will become Bengaluru’s problems. Will roads improve or the water problem disappear? What is unfortunate is that intellectuals like UR Ananthamoorthy have offered support. Is it to get a certain position?

Who sanctions war?

Even wars involving logistics and deployment of manpower and equipment to other continents, especially for a superpower, appears as justifiable mediation. Does it imply that democracy exonerates the head of a state indulging in war and the resultant atrocities? Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein’s act of killing 140 Shiites from Dujail pales in comparison to the bloodshed of  war. The only answer is the eradication of war.

Good looking DNA

DNA, your all-in-one newspaper, now looks impressive. I had written earlier about the poor print quality and un-impressive look, especially of Page 1 and 2. For the last few weeks I have noticed the changes in layout and print quality. DNA now has a better looking, compact layout style. All supplements are good and ‘After Hours’ seems to be everybody’s favourite. Your wholesome paper now has the DNA to attract more readers.
