He swallowed US $5,000 but found it tough to digest them. Abdulla Abdul Khader was detained by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of customs at Sahar airport five days ago on suspicion that he was carrying foreign currency. He was then admitted to the JJ hospital when it was found he had swallowed the contraband concealed in small capsules.

Khader ejected a total of 159 capsules containing foreign currency on Wednesday.  He has been remanded in judicial custody till January 3.

Customs sources said the AIU had information that some passengers travelling to Dubai were in the process of smuggling foreign currency out of the country. Officers, after  surveillance, detained four people — Abdulla Khader, Bendichal Khader, Hussain Abdulla and Ummal Farooq. The four were on their way to Dubai on December 23. Investigations revealed that Khader had swallowed capsules, containing foreign currencies.

All of them were admitted to the JJ Hospital, where Khader ejected the contraband.

The other suspects were not carrying foreign currencies. During investigations, Khader revealed that the currency was given to him by Ashokan. He said he had been offered Rs10,000 for smuggling the currencies, AIU sources said.
