MUMBAI: Indian hospitality market seems to have become a hot place as Minneapolis-based Carlson Hotels Worldwide plans to add another 40 hotels to its India portfolio. The hotels will be operational in the next five years.

Speaking to DNA Money, K B Kachru, senior VP-South Asia, Carlson Hotels Asia Pacific, said of the 40 hotels, which are under various stages of development, 18 will be under the Radisson Plaza and Radisson brands while the rest will be divided between Country Inns & Suites and Park Plaza brands.

“In fact, in a couple of months, we should be announcing our association with a Mumbai-based developer for our Radisson property in the city,” said Kachru.

An international management, marketing and franchise company, Carlson Hotels is currently present in 15 Indian locations with eight Radisson hotels and a similar number of Country Inns & Suites.

The international hotel chain will add nine locations including Gurgaon, Agra, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata, Kumarakom, Durgapur and Puri, besides adding hotels in the existing Goa market.

In Pune, Carlson Hotels will have its first class five-star Radisson brand in association with the Runwal Group. Work on the property is in full swing at Shivaji Nagar in Pune and the hotel is expected to start receiving guests towards the first half of 2007.

It has recently tied up with Pune-based Sahil Group for a five-star luxury resort and spa in Alibaug, Maharashtra. Upbeat on the off-beat location of his new property, Vinay Phadnis, chairman and managing director of Sahil Group, said, “An unexplored site by a major hospitality player so far, Alibaug’s close proximity to Mumbai and the upcoming metro city of Pune offer great potential for a spa resort. And to facilitate easy access to the destination, we will also start our own catamaran service once the property gets operational by 2006 end.”

Set up at a cost of Rs 100 crore (including land cost), Radisson Resort & Spa Alibaug is situated on 22 acres of prime waterfront land.

It features 120 guest rooms, suites, villas and ayurvedic pavilions for a range of spa treatments. The promoters are yet to decide on the accommodation tariff plans and the charges for availing spa treatments in the resort. “It will be announced before the launch,” is what Kachru had to say.

However, Phadnis said, “We will start with offering introductory rates before getting on the finalised tariff plans for the various facilities and services in the hotel.”

While the Sahil Group’s hospitality division - Sahil Resorts & Spa - owns and manages their flagship property in Lonavala, the promoters will be looking at tying up with an international specialist to manage the spa at Alibaug. And according to a company official, “In all probabilities, a renowned spa specialist firm from the UK will be assigned the management of this facility,” he said.
