The State Intelligence Department (SID) and the intelligence unit of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) are probing a “common game plan” in the arrests of six terror suspects from the city in three separate incidents.

The intelligence community has reportedly gone into a tizzy following the arrests. Top officials, however, admitted that “for Mumbai, the terror threat is now greater than ever before.” Also the back-to-back arrests have sparked immediate police response in large parts of the city and its suburbs.

For example, night-long combing operations were carried out at Mira Road and parts of Nalasopara earlier this week to track suspicious movements. The infamous Padgah village, which is close to Thane, has been kept under close watch.

Joint Commissioner of Police and ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi told DNA, “We are keeping a close tab on developments in view of the arrests of the terror suspects. Also were are trying to ascertain whether the arrests can be linked.”

Records showed that these places had been sanctuaries to members of various terror outfits in the past. The three LeT terror suspects who were arrested on January 6 had stayed in Mira Road for sometime.

“We have also tightened vigil in Mumbra — another favourite for SIMI cadres and LeT operatives,” said a senior police officer preferring anonymity.

Police officials said that the arrest of Maulana Gulam Yahya Ilahi Baksh was a “big catch”.

“The arrest can throw light on the hawala channels used by the maulana and his contacts to raise terror funds.  The charge-sheet of the maulana would contain a detailed account of his money-raising activities.”

Also the arrests of Manzur Mehmood Ansari and Nasiruddin Salauddin Siddique — two LeT suspects — have brought to light the renewed role of SIMI and the Maoists guerrillas of Nepal.

In another related development, top officials did not dismiss as coincidence the rise in robberies in the city and the terror arrests. Five robberies have been reported in various parts of Mumbai in the past two months.

The officials point out that money looted from a bank was routed to two of the five hijackers of the IC-814 Kathmandu-New Delhi flight.
