A host of new and unknown friendships were struck at the Wankhede stadium on Sunday morning as nearly 3,000 children from 45 schools in Mumbai came together to broker peace between India and Pakistan.

The event, which is part of the campaign launched by the NGO ‘Friends Without Borders’, aims to bring peace between India and Pakistan by encouraging children in India to write letters of goodwill to their counterparts in Pakistan.

It started with the unveiling of the world’s largest love letter — a 120 by 80 yard sheet of trampoline, which read, “To the children of Pakistan, let’s join hearts in friendship and together we can make a better world - From the children of India.”

Nearly 2,000 balloons, attached with friendship notes were sent off into the air.

“We have no idea where this balloon will go. But, anyone who finds the letter with one of these balloons will have their day made,” said Mark Jacobs.

“I think my classmates and friends missed something fantastic,” said 13-year-old Safa Khan from Mary Maculate School, Kalina. Only two of her friends Anam Gwaliori and Sneha Vichare accompanied her from the school. “It was a great feeling,” said Gwaliori, as she points to the smilie stamp on her wrist. “The face painting was also a lot of fun. Many children had exciting designs done,” she added.

Jacobs, who works with Manav Sadhna at Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad, is originally from San Francisco, where he and John Silliphant, met.
