Name: Jasbeer Singh

Cool Quotient: He’s revving the motion in stop motion animation, especially with his recent work in ‘Horn Ok Please’, a UK based company’s animated film about a Mumbai taxi driver.

  • Jasbeer is originally a sculptor from the Baroda school of art. “Mumbai is a difficult place for anyone artistically inclined,” he grimaces. He was about to move back to Punjab when space constraints kept him from building his own studio in aamchi Mumbai.
  • ‘Horn Ok Please’ is made in Belfast, but has a largely Indian crew including Vaibhav Kumaresh, the genius behind 80 per cent of the claymation on Indian television today. Jasbeer has been honing every skill possible on the animation circuit. “I don’t want to confine myself to any one area. I want to do everything - drawing, puppetry, story boarding - everything.”
  • ‘Horn OK Please’ is an eight minute animated feature on a day in the life of Lucky, a Mumbai taxi driver. He’s modelled on a good Samaritan taxi driver (yes, apparently they do exist!) that the director Joel Simon met on his trip to Mumbai.
  • Gross but true: Lucky’s stubble is Jasbeer’s actual hair.
  • “It’s such a cliché, but people from my village view the world so differently. I want to make my own film on this disparity,” he says. “For example when a cousin of mine saw the huge stretch of Central Park in New York, his first thought was, ‘Ah, what a fabulous grazing ground for my cows’!”
  • He’s therefore planning a series of displaced sardarjis - something he has already dabbled in in his first few individual features. “They’re based on some sardar jokes,” he smiles shyly. “Like a sardarji in Gujarat, the south, etc. I want to take him global now.”
