CHENNAI: The approaching Assembly elections and chief minister J Jayalalithaa's birthday on Friday has given twin reasons for sycophants to display their adoration for AIADMK's Amma. And, as they go overboard with posters depicting her in different avatars, religious groups are irked.

AIADMK activists have put up posters depicting Jayalalithaa as Annapoorna, the goddess of food, in some parts of Vridhachalam in Cuddalore district. The limited edition posters, which surfaced a few days before Jayalalithaa's 58th birthday, show her in the lotus posture, decked in gold and holding a bowl of food in one hand and a ladle in the other.

"It is outrageous to depict a mere mortal as the goddess of food. She (Jayalalithaa) should expel those who have put up the posters or else we will approach the election commission to bar the AIADMK from contesting," said Federation of Hindu Organisations secretary Vinayagar V Murali.

The Annapporani poster comes close on the heels of another controversial hoarding in Kancheepuram. The 150 x 10 ft hoarding - evidently a morphed picture - showed a frowning Jayalalithaa beside Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi in chains. While the Sankaracharya, along with his junior Vijayendra are all smiles in the picture, a steel chain runs around the senior seer's left wrist.

A few policewomen look on from the background. However, following protests from the BJP and the Kanchi Kamakoti Bhaktharkal Peravai (KKBP), the seer's picture was replaced with a bigger picture of a smiling Jayalalithaa.

Not long ago, a poster of Jayalalithaa as Virgin Mary had to be removed after Christian organisations protested.
