First-time director Saurabh Sengupta is paying a tribute to the mastery of Gulzar and his work in ‘Aandhi’ and ‘Khamoshi’ through a film called ‘Marham’, which will have the simplistic feel of the 70s cinema.

A look at the mechanics of a man-woman relationship set against the backdrop of 2001 Bhuj earthquake, Sengupta’s cast includes Manisha Koirala, Kay Kay Menon and Renuka  Shahane - who all have agreed in principal to be a part of the project.

Says Sengupta, “It is a purely emotion-based story, focusing on undefined relationships - it is about two people who don’t know whether their relationship is love or friendship, but something is keeping them connected.”

The characters, says Sengupta, will stand out and make an impact as much as the story. While Menon plays an earthquake victim, Koirala essays a high-powered socialite. “But it won’t be a Page 3 setting as such. Manisha’s character is like one of the many socialites we see but the focus, as I said, remains on relationships,” explains Sengupta.

Incidentally, Shahane, who was rumoured to be directing a film a week ago, has an amazing role. Says Sengupta, “She is a brilliant actor and her role in ‘Marham’ is well-etched out.”

Shahane is also upbeat. “It is an interesting story and though mine isn’t a lead character, it has been written well,” she says, adding that her script for her directorial venture will take a while to develop. “It was premature to write about me directing a film, which neither has a producer, nor a complete script right now,” she adds.

Marham, meanwhile, was to begin this March. “But it was delayed because we couldn’t find the producer. Now, it will go on the floors in May in London and Mumbai.”
