Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Dadar has summoned Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prasar Bharti KS Sarma for allegedly harassing and defaming a woman staffer of All India Radio (AIR), who has sued him for defamation.

Sharma is accused of transferring a woman employee Medha Kulkarni — programme executive, AIR, Mumbai — out of the city because “she was living with her boss and then Deputy Director General, Mumbai Vijay Dixit”.

According to Sarma, he took this step “on the basis of a letter Dixit’s wife Chitra wrote to him complaining that her husband was living with Medha Kulkarni”. His claim was strongly contested not only by Kulkarni and Dixit, but also by the latter’s wife Chitra. All the three strongly objected to Sarma’s comment and demanded he substantiate it. They said if Sarma indeed had the letter, he should produce it.

Kulkarni had objected to her transfer in November-December 2003, citing service conditions. According to her, she had been transferred to Mumbai in November-December 2002 from Ratnagiri, and as such, she was liable to be transferred only after four years.

Meanwhile, Kulkarni and Dixit wrote to many authorities to no avail. They then filed a defamation suit against Sarma. Metropolitan Magistrate of Dadar court asked the Mumbai police to investigate at the earliest and also asked Sarma to appear before Worli Police Station, before September 2005, which he did.

The Mumbai police found that the complaint against Sarma was true. The court then issued summons to Sarma and asked him to remain personally present.

The summons was reportedly served on him by the Delhi police on March 7. Sarma could not be contacted by DNA despite repeated attempts for two consecutive days.
