MOSCOW: A tunnel in Moscow's underground rail network collapsed on Sunday, Russian news agencies said. There were no casualties.

"The tunnel collapsed and a fire started in one of the carriages," a spokesman for Russia's emergency situations ministry, Viktor Beltsov, was quoted by RIA-Novosti as saying. Officials later denied there was a fire.

Passengers are being evacuated and emergency services have been sent to the scene of the incident between Voikovskaya and Sokol stations in northwest Moscow, Beltsov said.

Russian news agencies, citing emergency services, said a beam had fallen from the tunnel and pierced one carriage.

Services were suspended on the affected line and stations were shut, a witness said.
Reports from the ministry that the collapse had sparked a fire in the train were not confirmed later.

Moscow's subway system is used heavily. There are fewer passengers at weekends but there are usually at least a dozen people in each carriage.
