Inspired by the success stories of the Right to Information Act (RTI), a group of students has sought information related to admission procedures in  top five colleges in the city.

The students, attached to a student organisation Samatawadi Chhatrabharat allege the colleges – Wilson College, St Xaiver’s College, Elphinstone College, Bhavan’s College and Ramnarayan Ruia College – failed to provide the required information.

“As per the Right to Information Act, any institution has to provide the demanded information within 30 days from the date of application. But the colleges have failed to deliver the information to us,” alleges students.

The students sought information on topics such as the grants received by the colleges from the state government and details about its utilisation, amount of fees collected, the admission process for the academic year 2000-2006, implementation of scholarship schemes and donations taken by colleges.

They also wanted to know if the deposit amount collected from students during the admission process has been refunded to them.

Having failed to secure the information in the stipulated period, the students have now decided to meet the concerned officer of the institution for not furnishing the details.

“Students are usually kept in the dark over the fees collected. If there are any malpractices, it has to exposed,” said Manoj Tekkade, a postgraduate at Mumbai University and also a member of the Samatawadi Chhatrabharat.

However, students have been able to extract information from colleges like Sydenham College and KC College.

“Whatever information they gave was insufficient. While some colleges have failed to supply the information, some refused to part with the supply of information under the Right To Information Act,” said Gajanan Kale, general secretary,  Samatawadi Chhatrabharati.

“We were tied up with examination-related work. But process is on and the students  will receive the information immediately. That is why the delay,”  said Frazer Mascarenhas, principal of St.Xaiver’s College.

Registrar of Wilson College, M Abhyankar, has a different reason for the delay.

He said: “While applying for the information, the students said they will come to the college to collect the information. But they did not turn up.”
