TRELAWNY: Irfan Pathan picked up three confidence-boosting wickets, including that of West Indian skipper Brian Lara as India skittled out the hosts for 85 runs in a warm-up game on Friday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Brian Lara’s men failed to get going on a seamer-friendly surface in Jamaica and lasted just 25.5 overs.
Lara top-scored with 22 as only three West Indians reached double figures. Munaf Patel exploited the pitch to grab four for 10 from his six overs, while left-arm seamer Pathan chipped in with 3 for 25 in the final warm-up game for both sides before the World Cup begins in earnest next Tuesday.
As is the case these days, Zaheer Khan struck blood when he had West Indian opener Shivnaraine Chanderpaul caught down the leg-side by wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Shortly, Ajit Agarkar, Chris Gayle to edge one to Dhoni after the ball moved late and faster than expected. Lara, who came in at No.4, looked in fine touched as he cover drove and pulled with ease and class. He audaciously swatted the Agarkar straight down the ground for a boundary.
Skipper Lara survived a catch to Yuvraj Singh at point, but was out for 22 when he popped a return catch to Pathan.
Lara’s decision to bat first after winning the toss was aimed at giving his batsmen some valuable practice ahead of the World Cup, but the West Indies batting is now facing a crunch period.
