MUMBAI: Ailing hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, admitted to Tata Memorial Hospital for treatment of kidney cancer, is still hopeful of going to the US for treatment, his son Naseem said on Thursday.
Geelani flew in on Wednesday for treatment after there was delay in getting visa to the US. He was rushed here as his condition was 'deteriorating', Naseem Geelani said.
The US embassy has returned the passport saying that they were awaiting signals from Washington to give visa to Geelani, he said.
"Richard Shermon of US embassy told me on phone that as soon as we get any intimation from Washington, we will inform you," Naseem said.
Syed Geelani had undergone surgery for removal of one of his kidneys in 2003 at the Tata Memorial. He chose to rush here for emergency treatment as it was one of best equipped cancer hospitals in the country, Naseem said.
Both the father and son have applied for US visa this week to enable the chief of the hardline Hurriyat faction go abroad for treatment.
Geelani was given a one year validity passport on humanitarian grounds after intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Naseem said Geelani underwent a CT scan on Wednesday. The Apollo hospital in New Delhi had earlier diagnosed malignant tumour in his kidney.
Since there was some reaction to the dye used for CT scanning, Geelani was under observation in the ICU last night. He was subsequently shifted to private ward.
