MUMBAI: Greg Chappell is not a closed chapter. At least for the time being and for those who matter — the mandarins in the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Top Board officials feel that the coach alone cannot be blamed for the poor performance of the Indian team.
“If the team cannot score 200 runs, what can the coach do,” asked a senior official refuting reports that Chappell’s head will be under the chopping block.
“If Chappell has to to be removed so should the whole team. We’ll avoid any knee-jerk reactions,” said the official. The board, one learns, wants to give the beleaguered coach a patient hearing.
Chappell is to meet the board officials in Mumbai on April 6 when the captain and the manager will also be present. The key to Chappell’s fate may also depend on what Sanjay Jagdale reports to the Board.
Chappell told DNA that he is ready to meet the Board and make his point. He, however, was not willing to discuss the issues.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the coach was opposed to the inclusion of not just one but three players in the squad. His opposition to Virender Sehwag is well documented but what is not well know is that the coach was not in favour of selecting a fast bowler and a spinner also. He is likely to raise the point at the meeting. The role of selectors will also be under the scanner. The members of the selection committee are also likely to be present at the working committee meeting.
Board secretary Niranjan Shah also confirmed that there was no decision as yet to dump Chappell as reported in sections of media.
“No such decision has been taken. It will be a collective decision and we’ll not arrive at any conclusion till we meet.” Then he added: “We’re willing to listen to him.”
Meanwhile, the team was scheduled to leave the West Indies on Tuesday night. Some players will split for different destinations midway at the Heathrow airport, London. Those reaching Mumbai will arrive late on Wednesday night.
