Rail Europe targets Indian tourists

Indian tourists travelling to Europe will now have something more to look forward to. The popular Rail Europe has now launched high speed TGV EST European train service connecting 30 new destinations from France, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
The Rail Europe is especially targeting countries like India and China as they have the highest rate of tourists travelling from these countries every year. Europe particularly had over 85,000 Indian tourists booking tickets in 2006 through the Rail Europe’s network of agents.
Karim Mekachera, director, Maison De La France said, “The high speed trains have been introduced with the objective to connecting several popular but hard to reach regions such as Champagne, Ardenne and Alsace. The rail route will throw open new destinations and the Indian traveller can now experience these regions of France with Paris as the ideal hub as the trains start from the capital city.”
With more and more Indians venturing abroad, they are being targeted specially by European countries. “Indian tourists usually stop in our country for one day and a night and they usually don’t have enough time to visit places like Champagne and Lorraine. With our new trains they can reduce their travel time as well as visit these regions,” added Mekachera.
Indian travellers alone are estimated to contribute 30 per cent growth to the Rail Europe with 95 per cent of Indian travellers opting for the high speed train experience. “We will be offering affordable prices to Indian families through our agents. Group reservations especially would get good bargains,” assured Gopi Iengar, area manager, India and South Asia, Rail Europe.
The high speed trains will run at an average speed of 320kmp/h reducing the travel time by 50 per cent within France and other cities in Europe. “Over 2, 00,000 Indian tourists visit France and we expect this number to increase to 7, 00,000 in five years. Keeping this in mind the Rail Europe is keen to cash in the popularity with Indian travellers,” said Mekachera. “We are also planning to embark on a study about Indian tourists market to collect statistical data,” he added.
