‘Max Mara jeans don’t go well with our image’: Pradeep

If the buzz is to be believed, the young British designer Alexander McQueen, whose entire graduation collection was bought by the late stylist Isabella Blow, might be making his way to India. In fact, there’s also a strong rumour that Kimaya’s Pradeep Hirani might be bringing it down. Hirani, however, refuses to confirm or deny the rumours. “Only time will tell,” he says.
Anyway, if you thought the influx of fashion brands was restricted to the Gucci man - Mohan Murjani and the Sachdevs who are bringing down Jean Paul Gaultier, well, then we have news for you…about nine of them, actually. As it turns out, Pradeep Hirani is in talks with nine European brands, three of whom will sign their initials in Mont Blanc ink by this August.
The first of the brands of course is Max Mara, which will launch in India this September as a part of Kimaya in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, and then through stand-alone stores next February. Somehow Pradeep is convinced that Max Mara will be the right brand for India. “It’s not too high end, and not too low end - it’s bang in the middle,” says Hirani, making a pitch.
What will be fun to watch though is how the brand known for its structured jackets deals with Mumbai when it launches its Autumn Winter collection this September. “We’re going to fine tune the pieces for Mumbai,” Hirani clarifies.
What is bound to be a little bit of a problem though is Max Mara’s denim collection. Well, you see, jeans don’t exactly go with Kimaya’s brand image - considering it has been established as a fashion store that shuns casuals like the plague! “Well, I agree they don’t go well with our image, but that’s a part of the deal. Maybe we’ll display only a part of the collection…” Hirani trails off.
As far as we are concerned, we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that McQueen brings his shoe collection to India!
