NEW DELHI: Hard-nosed secrecy and armed guards will bookend the India release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, JK Rowling’s last offering in her seven-part series about boyish wizardry. The military-precision logistics has been conceived chiefly to thwart the pirates of the cheap print run.
Since the book is embargoed for worldwide release at 6.00am on July 21, Penguin India – the distributors of the Deathly Hallows in India – has made intricate arrangements to ensure the safety and timely delivery of the consignment.
It is learnt that Penguin has tied up with a security concern and a courier firm to ferry the precious cargo. The books will be air-shipped to major cities in sealed cartons, and then despatched through trucks to bookstores. Each truck will be escorted by six armed guards.
When the 2.30 lakh copies descend in India from the United Kingdom, they will be whisked away within hours to some 100 cities, said an official in Penguin India. She refused to reveal the consignment’s landing site.
People in the retail side of the business, however, are more forthcoming about the launch. “The consignment is probably going to land in Mumbai through ship,” said Baldev Verma, regional manager of India Book Distributors (IBD) in New Delhi. “It may have even landed by now.’’ IBD, like other distributors across India, has been offered advice on how to maintain vigilance on their stock till release.
“According to the schedule conveyed to us, the books will reach us by July 20 midnight accompanied by armed guards,” Verma said. “They will keep the books till 6.00 am.”
The books will be on sale from 6.30 am and many bookstores will begin an early shift that day. “We have an advance booking of almost 100 copies,” said Venkatesh of Delhi’s Eureka Books. “The demand is 30 per cent higher than that of previous Potter books.”
