NEW DELHI: India has crept to the top of the dark list of nations that trade in flesh. The country is South Asia ‘s most active point of origin of human trafficking, according to a United Nations study.
It is has emerged from the study that India also serves as the leading transit hub as well as the terminal for the people being peddled for prostitution in the region.
It is estimated that 300,000 to 500,000 Indian children have been tricked or coerced into prostitution. The flesh trade is known to trap children much younger than 10 years of age.
In 2006, 19-year-old Mina (name changed) of Batashipur village in Assam was approached by Seema, a neighbour’s relative. Seema told Mina’s mother that she could find the girl a job in a Gujarat fish factory. In September 2006, Mina and a few other village girls boarded a train for Gujarat.
The same afternoon, their train was stopped near Bongaigaon, in Assam, by representatives of the Initiatives for Development, Education and Alternative (IDEA). They revealed to Mina that she and 14 other girls had been fooled and were being trafficked.
Mina may have been lucky but many girls and women in India are pushed into the flesh by people who routinely use job offers as bait.
The law and the risks do not daunt flesh traders because human trafficking is the third most profitable illicit business, after arms and drugs.
The disquieting revelations have roused the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) into organising a three-day global conference to tackle the crisis.
The Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (GIFT) will be held in New Delhi from October 10. The initiative is in partnership with the ministry of home affairs and the women and child development ministry (WCD).
In the past seven months, 96 rescue operations have been conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, and West Bengal, and 800 people — including 662 minors — have been rescued.
