With coach committee meeting not scheduled to take place in the immediate future, Lalchand Rajput is set to stay in charge of team for Test series against Pakistan
MUMBAI: Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that the coach committee meeting be held in Jaipur on November 18 but the Board of Control for Cricket in India has said it might not be possible.
According to sources, the former India captain has mailed a suggestion to the Board that the meeting be held on Sunday in Jaipur where most members of the Board are expected to congregate for the final ODI of the India-Pakistan series.
A meeting of the Indian Premier League is also scheduled for November 17 for which, anyway, many Board members are expected.
But the BCCI is believed to have told Gavaskar that the meeting cannot take place on November 18 as other members of the committee will not be present then.
The seven-member committee is headed by BCCI president Sharad Pawar with former captains Ravi Shastri, S Venkataraghavan besides Gavaskar as members.
The contents of the mail were not known but according to sources, Gavaskar did not suggest any name.
The last meeting of the coach committee was scheduled to take place in Mumbai on November 3 but it had to be put off due to the unavailability of Gavaskar, who was unwell at the time.
With no meeting immediately scheduled, it is now almost certain that Lalchand Rajput, the interim manager of the team, will continue in his position for the three-Test series against Pakistan.
The first Test begins in New Delhi on November 22. Rajput was initially appointed for the Twenty20 World Cup but got extension for the ODI series against Australia and Pakistan.
Now he is set to get an extension for the Test series against Pakistan as well.
The date of the next meeting of the committee is not known but the Board expects to finalise a candidate before the team takes the flight to Australia. “We will meet soon,” said Niranjan Shah.
Meanwhile, the team for the first Test is expected to be picked in the city on November 14 but Shah said the date is not final.
“I’m yet to get the confirmation of availability of all the members,” he said. Newly-appointed Test captain Anil Kumble is expected to attend the meeting.
