The race to get to the semi finals of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division has become very interesting after the conclusion of the fifth round of matches.

MUMBAI: The race to get to the semi finals of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division has become very interesting after the conclusion of the fifth round of matches in the seven-round league stage of the national cricket championship.
The fifth round saw Group A leaders Maharashtra slipping down the ladder by losing to Delhi resulting in the latter taking the lead and three other contenders Maharashtra, holders Mumbai and Saurashtra trailing the front runners by two points going into the sixth round starting on December 17.
Delhi defeated Maharashtra by seven wickets at Nagothane in Raigad district, Mumbai scored a heart-stopping last-ball win over Rajasthan at Jhalawer while Saurashtra scored a thrilling three-run win over Karnataka at Mysore.
In fifth place are Tamil Nadu, on 12 points, who started the league poorly but have since then gathered steam but yet may find themselves left out in the end.
In Group B, Baroda have taken a seven point lead over joint second placers Hyderabad and Orissa (both on 10) and look heading surely for a berth in the last four after their exciting three-wicket victory over Andhra to make the fifth round a very interesting one indeed on several counts.
Group A seems to be slightly more open than Group B where the main contest seems to be for the second semi final slot, Baroda being far ahead of the rest with two ties in hand too.
In Group B, Orissa and Punjab have only one match each in hand while the other five have two apiece.
Points position (after fifth round)
Group A: Delhi - 17 points, Maharashtra, Mumbai and Saurashtra - 15 each; Tamil Nadu - 12; Karnataka - 9; Himachal Pradesh - 4 and Rajasthan - 3.
Group B: Baroda - 17 points, Hyderabad and Orissa - 10 each, Andhra - 9; Bengal, Punjab and UP - 8 each.
Sixth round matches (Dec 17-20):
Group A: Himachal Pradesh v Mumbai in Dharamsala; Karnataka v Delhi in Karnataka; Tamil Nadu v Rajasthan in TN; Maharashtra v Saurashtra at Nagothane.
Group B: Punjab v Orissa in Punjab; Andhra v Baroda in Andhra; Bengal v UP in Bengal.
