An online group of young professionals have launched a campaign to allow Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen to visit Kolkata, where she had taken asylum after being externed from Bangladesh.
The West Bengal government had ordered Taslima to leave Kolkata after the radical forces took objection to her presence there. The union government has also ordered Taslima, who is currently staying in New Delhi, not to visit Kolkata again.
The group has members between age group 25 to 35, who have prepared an application to be sent to the President, Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of Supreme Court requesting them to intervene into the matter. Rajendra Phadke, one of the group members, said, “We are appealing all the democratic people to send the application on presidentof india@rb.nic.in, http://pmindia. nic.in\\write.htm and supremecourt@nic.in.
The West Bengal government has washed its hands of this affair and would not allow Taslima to stay in Kolkata. The Union government has restricted her from speaking and meeting to anyone and delivering speeches. Either we need to change the definition of democracy or we should allow some handful miscreants to change the definition of our freedom.”
