NEW DELHI: With three important posts in the Indian missions in Washington and New York likely to fall vacant in the next few months, hopefuls have begun discreet lobbying.
While former foreign secretary Shyam Saran and India’s envoy to Pakistan Satyabrata Pal are in the race for the top slot in Washington, others are vying for the plum post of heading India’s permanent mission to the UN in New York.
Incumbent Nirupam Sen has already had two extensions and is unlikely to get another. Hardeep Puri, India’s ambassador to Brazil, is keen to move to New York. Known to be close to BJP prime minister-designate LK Advani, Puri has also mended his relations with the Congress. His record is excellent and he worked hard to make sure Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Brazil in 2006 was a success.
Puri is a serious contender to take over from Sen. Incidentally, Sen and Puri were together in Colombo when former national security advisor the late JN Dixit was high commissioner there. Sen was Dixit’s deputy and the two never saw eye to eye. Puri, Dixit’s blue eyed boy sided with him against Sen.
Veena Sikri, a former high commissioner to Bangladesh, is also in the running. She is the senior-most officer for the post and had protested when current foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon was promoted over her and several others to the post. She believed she was discriminated against because she was a woman. Sikri has worked in the US for two terms and is familiar with multilateral issues, a must for the post.
Meera Shankar, currently ambassador in Berlin, is another officer keen to go to the US. Shankar worked in prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s office and has a good equation with the current establishment.
Ronen Sen’s No. 2 Raminder Singh Jaswal is also due to move out of Washington this year. This is the third slot ambitious foreign service officers will be looking to fill.
