MCD feels Delhi University students can connect better with athletes and tourists
NEW DELHI: Touts and quacks known to dupe foreign tourists in the national capital will have it hard in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
If the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is successful in its endeavour, students from the Delhi University (DU) would welcome and guide foreign athletes and tourists expected to arrive in the capital during the games. The MCD views this as an important means of changing the mindset that foreigners are not safe in the capital.
The civic body is gung-ho about getting as many youth possible to volunteer for various services for the games. MCD not only wants students to work as guides and ushers for foreign athletes but also expects these young minds to monitor the progress of various civic projects for the Commonwealth games that fall under its purview.
Vijender Gupta, chairman, MCD standing committee said: “MCD has already started talks with various DU colleges about this programme. To begin with, we have affiliated with Shahid Sukhdev College of Business Studies and will hold talks with other colleges shortly.”
According to MCD, well over 5,000 athletes from more than 80 countries are expected to visit Delhi during the sports meet. Having well educated people involved in overseeing arrangements would ensure better safety of the guests.
“MCD will face a challenging task of providing civic amenities, as well as other aesthetic arrangements for the visiting athletes and spectators of the games. The youth will form core groups to monitor various civic services like sanitation, horticulture works, street lights, repair and cleanliness of roads,” Gupta disclosed.
Civic officials and experts will train these students for the required tasks. The civic body is also mulling a stipend for the volunteers.
Gupta added that students would be persuaded to organise pantomime shows, cultural programmes, folk dances and interaction programmes to acquaint athletes and spectators with Indian culture.
